The Equestrian Look with a cute little twist.

It is my firm belief that fashion should be both fun and practical. That is why I utterly adore the Equine look and have been sporting it for almost two decades now.

The look is based on images from the British countryside; packs of young men racing over hedges in their trusted Hunting attire and young ladies performing in a dressage arena.

How To Get The Look
Firstly, take a look at some image of horse riders. This is the look you want to achieve yet do not not want to look too much like you are just about to disappear into the sunset, a fine line has to be drawn and the beauty of this style is you beside how far you want to go.

Start by adding equestrian inspired pieces to your wardrobe. I especially enjoy accessories from Ralph Lauren such as leather gloves and silk scarves alongside shirts and polos paired with knee high boots but if you are looking for something a little less subtle try investing in a vintage coast, either a Shadbelly, Harewood riding jacket or tweed trench coat. If you want something a little less formal try wearing a gilet over a cable knit/Aran jumper or a tailored rugby shirt.

I would not suggest wearing Jodhpurs casually, instead wear skinny jeans or trousers in a neutral tan, cream or gray colour with Knee high riding or jodhpur boots, or move a step away and match them with your favourite heels.

A big thing for me, especially on men, is a Stock Tie. Originally used as a make-shift bandage if the worst was to happen during a show/hunt. All traditional styles have to be tied and clipped into place by hand, although pre-tied ones are available from some shops. You could try bringing a little colour into the outfit with an ornate pin.

Materials are important. try to aim for natural materials such as wool, cashmere and tweed. Plastic should never, ever be worn.

For a cute little twist on this look I like wearing a ruffle blouse under a jumper or cardigan and pairing it with a blazer or green tartan skirt - but remembe the golden rule if you are wearing a revealing top try to cover your legs and vice versa, and always think classic.

As a final note. Try visiting (either physically or via the internet) traditional designer shops as they will give you ideas for traditonal yet modern looking outfits.

I utterly adore this image by Ralph Lauren. Although not strickly Equestrian it combined a number of elements, it uses natural materials such as wool and leather in natural colours giving it a feeling of Rural Vogue. I especially enjoy the turtle neck jumper under a patchwork cape and may consider incorporating something like that into my own wardrobe.
